Vishy Anand: "Win in Khanty-Mansiysk Is Like Oxygen"

Anand gave another interview upon the arrival at home: this time the challenger was hosted by Headlines Today.

"Well, you can imagine that [the win] was a bit like oxygen for me... I mean I really needed this result for my moral, motivation, for being positive about life and chess again... I mean it came as a surprise for me as well. I went to Khanty-Mansiysk to show good chess and have a good performance, but what happened is perfect.

...I would say the most important is not to pay a lot of attention to that [what others are saying]. I didn't go to any websites before the tournament, there were a lot of discussions, but I just didn't see the point in that [in following them]. It can really upset you and I just cut myself from that, so I wasn't much effected by that. Only towards the end I found out from some of my friends what were the odds on me winning and what were the predictions. Well, I guess once you win you can laugh a bit at it. 

...I think I went there in a right frame of mind, with low expectations. I mean I didn't have expectations. I didn't think of where I would finish, but I preferred to think what I was going to do in this or that game, you know just going step by step..."
