Minsk: experience and youth share lead at Bronstein Memorial

The encounters between the former world title challengers always attract special attention. In round 5 of the Bronstein Memorial which is taking place in Minsk, Belarus Alexander Khalifman faced Vladimir Akopian - his challenger in the final knock-out world title match of 1999 in Las Vegas.

The last duel between them finished in Akopian's favor, it took place about two years ago.

Now Khalifman took a confident win.

KHALIFMAN - AKOPIAN

The typical hedgehog setup of Paulsen line in Sicilian is on the board. Armenian GM has just made a rare move 13...Rad8?!. Apparently, it caused all further problems Black has experienced. Usually the rook is placed on с8 and it would be logical to play so in this position too.
14.Nd5! The best reply. Such blows usually are taking place when the black knight is on c6, but it turns out that even "the safer" location of the knight can't save from such tricks.
14...exd5 15.cxd5 Nc5 Impossible to maintain the material: 15...Qb8 16.Nc6. That's why d8 is not the best placement for the rook.
16.bxc5 bxc5? A mistake, 16...dxc5 was less harmful. Now it's even easier for White to play because of the Black's  weaknesses.
17.Nb3 Khalifman leads his pieces in the right direction. Maybe 17.Bf3! is also possible because there's not threat of taking on d4.
17...Rfe8 The move that puts no obstacles for the White's plans. 17...а5 looked more strong.
18.Bd2 The situation may be described as "White has a considerable advantage" or even "strategically White is winning." Khalifman converted his advantage into an extra pawn with two bishops, eventually he won confidently.

Khalifman shares lead with Daniil Dubov, both have 4.5 out of 5.
Information on the tournament

"Minsk brings me a lot of pleasant memories," openchess.by cites the former FIDE champion. "In 2010 I won Minsk-open, but generally, I have visited Minsk a lot of times starting from 1985. And now I didn't expect such a huge event here. I am very happy for the organisers and I would like to wish them success in organising this event in future."
