Eljanov Beats Jakovenko To Grab Solo Lead in Poikovsky

Pavel Eljanov disappointed Dmitry Jakovenko ones again: recently he defeated Russian GM in a mini match of the World Cup which took place in Tromso. Today Ukrainian took an upper hand on Jakovenko in Round 5 of the Poikovsky tournament.

"I knew my opponent quite good as I've prepared especially to him for several days," Pavel said, "That's why I chose a quite rare line of Nimzo-Indian. Maybe it doesn't give that much White, but the position is still not well developed. The line with 7.с6 can definitely be named after Morozevich; Alexander first played this move against Ruslan Ponomariov five years ago in Tal Memorial  - he won that game. He used the move again later. Nowadays the line is qute well studied. However, 8.е3 is still a rare move; it made Jakovenko to  take long thinking pauses. I was lucky: apparently the position was quite unknown to him, so he was in a time trouble up to already 30th move.

Nonetheless, it's noteworthy that Dmitry played quite well up to a certain point. Black still had small problems, but in general the position was close to equal.

ELJANOV - JAKOVENKO

26...c5?! After 26...f6 Black would probably achieve a draw 27.Nxc6 Rf7 28.Rxf7 Kxf7 and so on.
27.h4! Не 27.Rxc5? Rfc8 with a draw. Instead I played for domination. The fact is that Black has practically no move to make. 27...g6?! I guess that wasn't the best reaction. At the board I calculated 27...h5 with the idea of playing f6 somewhere, Rg3 would be answered by g5.
28.h5 Objectively the position is already very hard for Black. It actually didn't last for a long after this."
28...f6? 29.Ng4 g5 30.fxg5 fxg5 31.Nh6+ Kh8 32.Nf7+ Kg8 33.Nxg5 h6 34.Nh7 Rf5 35.Rg3+ Kh8 36.Rg6 1-0

Ivan Cheparinov's performance is quite unfortunate: today he lost against Ernesto Inarkiev as white. Viktor Laznicka was stronger than Viorl Bologan.

The tournament eventually has a solo leader - Pavel Eljanov with 3.5 points. Four players with 3 points are following him.
