Ashot Vardapetyan to Referee WC Match

Ashot Vardapetyan will referee Anand - Carlsen match. He was the match referee in Anand - Gelfand match as well.

Let us remind you, Anand - Carlsen World Championship match will take place in Chennai from 6th to 26th November.

  • This was decided by the FIDE Presidential Board

  • The opening ceremony of the World Championship match between Viswanathan Anand and Boris Gelfand will be held in the Mikhail Vrubel Hall of the Tretyakov Gallery, on 10 May. At the same time, the Chief Arbiter Ashot Vardapetyan will do the draw to determine who will play with what colour in each of the twelve games. The ceremony will end with the concert by the pianist Denis Matsuev and young Russian musicians.

  • The both participants of the World Championship match - Viswanathan Anand of India and Magnus Carlsen of Norway - signed the official contract on the match. This was confirmed by FIDE president assistant Berik Balgabayev on his Twitter page.

    According to the contract the player has the right to take two-days pause in case of illness.

    Magnus Carlsen is heading to Chennai to check the living and playing conditions already tomorrow .

  • Karjakin gave a short commentary on the upcoming World title match. After Carlsen decided not to rush on the match decision (Magnus hasn't yet signed the contract, he plans to do it only after the Sinquefield cup he's participating in will finish) there's a theoretical possibility that he will be replaced. If so Sergey would be the one taking his place as he finished second at the Candidates. Let us remind you, Carlsen asked FIDE to postpone the match, his request was declined by the FIDE president.

  • In an interview to Chesspro GM Kramnik was asked whether he would agree to help Anand in the upcoming WC match against Carlsen if he got such a request: 

    "Honeslty I have no idea. I haven't thought of that at all. I have my own plans connected to rest... After such a tough competition and preparation which was tiresome, I want to recover. I definitely won't be available for any offers throughout the next two months and then we will see. If Vishy offers, I may think of that..."

  • Norwegian website vg.no refers to Carlsen and reports about his wish to get support from the 13th world champion in the upcoming world title match.

  • Carlsen confrims his participation in the WC match against Anand in Sochi

  • The drawing of colours has taken place during the opening ceremony of the World Championship match in Sochi. In the starting game, the challenger Viswanathan Anand will have the white pieces. Game 1 will start tomorrow, on November 8th, at 12:00 GMT.

    There will be 12 classical games in Sochi (in case the winner isn't determined faster than scheduled).
