No Women in Semifinals of Geneva Masters: Judit Polgar Also Withdraws (GAMES)

The second round matches in Group A of Geneva Masters were played today. Judit Polgar, much like Alexandra Kosteniuk, lost two games in a row and withdrew the competition. Today she could do nothing against Vladimir Kramnik.

Shakhriyar Mamedyarov defeated Yannick Pelletier 1.5-0.5 and qualified for the semifinal.

  • Third playing day of the London supertournament in rapid chess wasn't deciding a lot. All the favourites qualified tothe play off. Only Kramnik drew both of his games, so Sadler could catch him if he would have defeated Svidler, however, he failed to do so.            

  • The day two of the Geneva Chess Masters in Group B brought the following results: Alexandra Kosteniuk lost against Hikaru Nakamura, while Etienne Bacrot defeated his compatriot Romain Edouard 1.5-0.5. Thus, Nakamura and Bacrot scored 2 points each and move into semifinal, Kosteniuk and Edouard withdraw. Tomorrow's encounters won't decide anything.

  • Semifinals of the London Chess Classic have finished. No play offs were played. Nakamura eliminated Kramnik, Gelfand was stronger than Adams. 

    Kramnik again lost against American in a drama match: after a draw in Game 1, he got a winnign endgame in the return game.

  • Eventually Vladimir Kramnik managed to move on to Round 3 of the World Cup. He won the 2nd rapid game against Mikhail Kobalia and admitted the Round was tough. "It's clear that the next round will not be easy," he added. The former world champion didn't know his opponent in Round 3, he was informed that he will face Areschenko of Ukraine.

  • The women's team "Chess beauty saves the World" was crushed in Round 3 of Razuvaev Memorial. There was almost no fight in Alburt - Kosteniuk, Sedina - Gulko encounters; Mikhalchishin took more than 4 hours to defeat Irina Krush.

  • Two games of Round 7 of Grand Prix Beijing finished unexpectedly quickly: Wang Hao defeated Anish Giri in 22 moves, while Shakhriyar Mamedyarov took an upper hand on Veselin Topalov in 24 moves. In the first case Chinese GM was better prepared to sharp variation of Philidor defense. In another game Topalov miscalculated on 20th move (instead of 20...Ne4 he had to play 20...Nf5) and didn't prolong defense on 22nd move (22...g5).
