Sergey Karjakin won't be the next World Rapid Chess Champion

The next few days will be outstanding for the rapid chess fans: at the same time two grand rapid chess events will be under way.

The main competition of the large festival Sberbank Open has started today in Kiev. Ten GMs will compete in a round-robin tournament: Anatoly Karpov, Sergey Karjakin, Evgeny Tomashevsky (all Russia), Veselin Topalov (Bulgaria), Peter Leko (Hungary), Arkadij Naiditsch (Germany), Sergey Zhigalko (Belarus), Pavel Eljanov, Anton Korobov and Alexander Areschenko (all Ukraine). The event is held in the Olympic yard (you can see it on the image) of the national sport complex Olimpiyskiy.

Today there will be played three rounds. Another three rounds will take place tomorrow, while the final three rounds are scheduled to be played the day after tomorrow.

A massive tournament has started in Khanty-Mansiysk - the World Blitz and Rapid Chess Championships.

Rapid and blitz tournaments will be held in Swiss format in 15 rounds.
June 6, 7 and 8 will determine the strongest rapid player (five rounds to be played a day), June 9 and 10 will bring the blitz champion (16 and 14 rounds responsively).

Noteworthy is that the reigning rapid champion Sergey Karjakin decided to skip the official championship and play in Kiev instead, which means there will be a new rapid champion soon; the reigning blitz chess champion Alexander Grischuk will defend the title in Khanty-Mansiysk.
