Alekhine Memorial: Ding Liren "Was Only Going for a Draw" but Eventually Defeated Levon Aronian

The Alekhine Memorial started for GM Aronian quite unsuccessfully: he was defeated by one of the rating outsiders of the tournament Chinese Ding Liren.

Aronian stood worse during the entire game. It seems that his experiment with 12...Bc4 was a bad idea. 

This is what has happened closer to the time control.

DING LIREN - ARONIAN

32.Nd5! Nxf1 33.Nb6 Qa7 34.Rxf1 Nf6 35.Be5 At the press conference Chinese player admitted by playing so he was only looking forward to a draw.
35...Nd5 36.Nxd5 exd5 Defending after 36...cxd5 37.c6
wouldn't be any pleasant.

37.Bxg7! Kxg7 38.Qg5+ Kf8 39.Qf6 Kg8 40.Qg5+ Kf8 41.Qf6 Kg8 Ding Liren discovered he was winning only after the time control.

42.Re1! axb4 42...h6 43.Re3 Kh7 44.Re7! also doesn't help.
