The second rapid Vladimir Petrov Memorial will be held from February 15-17 in Jurmala, Latvia. GM Alexei Shirov told Vesty Today about the problems he faced as the organizer of the competition:

"The Aeroflot Open is taking place in Moscow at the same time as our Memorial. Now it has changed the format and became the rapid chess tournament. The prize fund has increased significantly. That's why Mamedyarov for instance chose Moscow. I can't offer him the same conditions here. Morozevich complained about the regulations. Namely, he thinks that the games should start after midday, while according to our regulations the games on weekends will start immediately after the breakfast. Why not? Petrov Memorial is not held only for the leading GMs. ... I guess you can play in an hour after your breakfast. I don't really want to adapt to anyone, I just want this to be sport with its own chess democracy."

Let us remind you that Alexander Morozevich won last year's Petrov Memorial which was held in a different format.

Apart from Petrov Memorial Jurmala will host the international children chess tournament Alexei Shirov Winter Cup which will take place from February 13-20.

"I wish Latvia would host international children chess tournaments, - GM noted. - In this case we have the competition for the players under 14. Last year the furthest team that came was from Tatarstan. This year we will have participants from the Far East. The teams from Russia, Belarus and Lithuania are also participating. All the information regarding the tournament is available on our chess federation website. You should understand that we really want chess to get more attention from the city. We should popularize the oldest game and that's what we are trying to do."
