Bucharest: first round to prove expectations

The 6th Kings Tournament started in Bucharest. This can already be considered as a success: this year everything was pointing that the traditional Romanian supertournament wasn't going to take place. So, instead of 6 GMs - 4 GMs gathered in Fall in Bucharest.

As the time control (see the reggukations here), so the participants' list was preparing to have some tense fight. The first round proved expectations. Veselin Topalov playing against Fabiano Caruana, prepared improvement for White in the Grunfeld defence, which took place in Game 3 of Navara - Svidler match held in June. Italian turned on thinking mode, however, that didn't help him to solve the problems. Veselin had an obvious advantage in the endgame.

TOPALOV - CARUANA

32.Rxa7? White stopped on taking only one pawn, while it could have taken two and prevent activation of Black: 32.Bxe3 Nxe3 33.Ra3, followed by taking on а7 (with check) and f5. Not that White's position is completely won, but it was quite close to such a result. Veselin completely missed the chance to win when he didn't use his rival's mistake on move 38.

As a result, Topalov not just failed to use his chance, but he also let Ivanchuk lead. Ukrainian gained a relatively easy win against Nisipeanu: an unexpected variant with 6...b5 in Nimzo-Indian defence didn't help Nisipeanu to overcome problems gained in the opening. Ivanchuk got a comfortable play and beat his opponent confidently.
